Viaticus' New Foray into Religion; Welcome, Father Everett Akagi!

January 2nd, 5773

Viaticus is charting a new, albeit not unexpected, course. One that recognizes that space exploration is not a thing of cold, technological pride, but something profoundly human.

Into the New Year, Nathan Tethers officially announced the appointment of Father Everett Akagi, promoting him from Catholic pastor to a newly ordained priest of The Unitarian Church of the Stars. As such, Father Akagi will serve as the company’s first interstellar spiritual advisor. The hire marks a significant step in Viaticus’ latest endeavor: making a space for all worship, just as its made space for international collaboration in galactic pioneering. The Unitarian Church of the Stars is a modern, inclusive faith that embraces community of all creeds, treating scientific discovery as a sacred pursuit rather than a challenge to belief. Its theology emphasizes unity, curiosity, and reverence for the vastness of the cosmos, which are values that align closely with Viaticus’ mission to expand humanities presence beyond the familiarity of Earth. For the Tether's Dynasty, bringing a priest into the organization is not a departure from science, but a compliment to it.For Father Everett Akagi, accepting the role is no small decision. As the son of the Akagi Law Firm, he could have chosen a luxurious life as a fellow lawyer, representing Viaticus alongside his family. Or, as someone who recently transitioned from career to churchdom, he could have lived the peaceful silence of an Earth church. Instead, in his first foray into space, he's stepped farther from home than he's ever known. His work will involve taking care of the new church on Wayfarer, hosting regular communions, and inspiring faith in the habitants of Viaticus where life itself is incredibly fragile.“God—whatever you may call that God—has never been bound solely to a building, to a book. A higher power looks out for us, always." Father Akagi said, when asked for a statement, “So, why should it be bound to a planet? If humanity is going to live among the stars, then compassion, reflection, and meaning need to go with us. I'm honored that Viaticus has provided me the opportunity.”By welcoming Father Everett Akagi and UCOTS into its operations, Viaticus is signaling that the future of exploration is not just about going where no man has gone before, but about sustaining the humans who dare to tread there. It is a bold experiment and, like so many Viaticus ventures, it is driven by the belief that progress requires courage in all its forms.

A Look into the Viaticus Matriarch

August 7th, 5772

Recently, Viaticus socials—specifically, their Bluesky account—has been posting promotional material on incoming updates, with one piece barring an uncanny resemblance to the wife of Nathan Tethers, Alexis Tethers.

Which may come as no surprise to a great many of us. It's hardly the first that a brand has used Alexis' beauty to be their face, and besides, who can fault our superior for his love of bombshell blondes? However, despite her bonafide celebrity status, a part of Mrs. Tether's appeal is her mystery. Not secretive, but not overtly public, either. A symbolic figure, orbiting Viaticus' achievements. As a corporation that prides itself in it's female-lead origins, we take interest, and write for those wanting to look further into the infamy of the Tether's wife.Growing up in Los Angeles—surrounded by the glamour, ambition, and restless energy of a city that teaches its children how to be seen—she captured the heart of Nathan Tether's in 5750, not long after he took the reigns as the Viaticus authority. A tale as old as time. Ever since, Alexis' name has been one of reverence and envy amongst the upper echelon, as she worked her way up to be part of the Tether's Dynasty. Her most historic contribution would come to be on Pioneer, one of Viaticus’ earliest space colonies, where the couple strived to give birth beyond Earth. To conceive the first 'spaceborn' citizen of Viaticus, and prove that humanity could not only survive, but begin anew among the stars. Albeit, the path to that future was not so simple, as the travel between Earth and space proved strenuous time and time again. Many of their pregnancies did not meet fruition. What defined Alexis was not the hardship itself, but the composure with which she met it. Those close to her describe a woman of immense resolve, someone who understood that progress rarely comes without cost, and who refused to let that truth harden her spirit. That perseverance ultimately found its most hopeful expression in the birth of Nora Tethers, the first spaceborn, and heir to Viaticus. Nora’s existence represents more than lineage. She symbolizes continuity, resilience, and the belief that life belongs wherever humanity dares to go.

In an organization defined by bold trajectories and impossible distances, Alexis Tethers stands as a reminder that endurance is its own form of exploration. Her legacy is not written in propulsion systems or star charts, but in grace, carried steadily forward, even when the ground beneath her no longer existed.

The Tethers Empire

Viaticus → From via (“road, path”) + -āticus (adjective-forming suffix). Pertaining to traveling or a journey.1962, President John F. Kennedy signs the Communications Satellite Act, providing the regulatory framework for private companies in the United States to own and operate their own satellites.

Of the same year, elated by the news, Sigourney Alphonse Tethers drew up blueprints to conquer the stars. She was a modern woman for her time, Sputnik and the 20th-centuary Space Race igniting a passion for space exploration. While no astronaut herself, Sigourney studied extensively in her personal time, and balanced the costs, possibilities, and intricacies of bringing human life outside of Earth.

Alas, despite Sigourney's prestigious upbringing as a Tether's daughter, it would not be until 1964 that women would be allowed to work, and not until 1988 that women could run their own businesses. By then, whilst Sigourney's passion for space exploration never died, she had settled for being a wife, mother, and heiress. She spent her life donating to space exploration, hosting fundraisers in the name of aerospace, and helping to raise a dynasty that'd support life amongst the cosmos.

It was not until nearly 4000 years later, would her dream be realized, in the form of her descendent. Born
July 20th 5641, Norman Tethers would eventually find the blueprints left by his multi-great grandmother, and become fascinated by his lineages unrealized potential.

At the behest of his father to join the military, Norman would be sure to attend basic training specifically in France, so he may pursue classes at the International Space University. There, he would acquire his PhD in Aerospace Engineering, as well as meet his wife, Angelica Stewart. After six years in service, he interned at Roscosmos, took on projects at CNSA, and began forming the bones of Viaticus. As a military man, many of his brothers took issue with Dr. Tether's international approach.

"We are dust, and to dust we shall return," Norman Tethers would cite from Genesis 3:19 of the Bible, a dedication to his religion that has carried over from generations, "Do you think the cosmos cares for the borders of said dust? We are all, collectively, in the same sea of the same stars. I think we will find that if the world is not wide enough for all of us, the galaxy will be."With sheer hard work and determination, and no small amount of help from his noble ancestry, Dr. Norman Tethers would found Viaticus Incorporated in 5678. Several space programs would contribute to its reality, including NASA, ESA, Roscosmos, CNSA, and JAXA. All striving to bring Earth together, rather than compete for the same Milky Way.

Not long after, 5728, the next heir to the Tethers family tree is born, the very first in Viaticus name. He follows in his fathers footsteps, with an education in Aerospace Engineering and experience in the military. At the young age of 21, after Norman Tether's official retirement, Nathan Tethers takes on the role.5767, Nora Tethers is welcomed into the world, the first human to be born on Viatcus' own Pioneer. A brave beginning, as she is also the first female leader to-be, since Sigourney Tether's conceptualization.

Under their command, the Tether's Empire will pave the way to a better humanity.

The Unitarian Church of the Stars

Viaticus' UCOTS strives to assuage struggle, bridge communities, and prove that faith and science are not opponents but allies.Initially a traditional Catholic Church, Nathan Tether's has recruited a growing party to provide an inclusive holy place, amongst Wayfarer. The term 'Unitarian' does not hold the same political implications that it does on Earth, but the Unitarian Church of the Stars does adopt its approach to pluralistic faiths.

Despite the Tether's interest in STEM, they are far from lacking in faith, passing along not only a rich education but a strong sense of spirituality. Nathan Tether's father taught him the importance of prayer, just as his father before him, as well as his father before him. When the Akagi Law Firm—whom legally represents the Viaticus brand—had a son leave their law career in favor of the pastoral calling, Nathan Tether's envisioned a new future for churchdom, and recruited Everett Akagi as the Father of the Unitarian Church of the Stars.

Viaticus Inc. Inventions

Viaticus Tech has participated in the redistribution, research, and creation of the most innovative tech imaginable. Here, humanity gets closer to magic than ever dreamed before.

Solar Energy; Viaticus' Guiding Light

The Sun is the major source of energy for Earth’s
oceans, atmosphere, land, and biosphere—but most of all, for Viaticus' colonies and equipment.
Averaged over an entire year, approximately 342 watts of solar
energy fall upon every square meter of Earth, 44 quadrillion watts of power to be exact. As a comparison, a large electric power plant produces about 1 billion watts of power. It would take 44 million such power plants to equal the energy coming from the Sun. That's a tremendous amount of clean, abundant energy, 55% of which either gets absorbed by our atmosphere or reflects back into space.
Much like Earth, Viaticus revolves around the Sun, albeit perhaps not literally. Rather, we harness the power of the Sun for most of our necessities, including electricity, heating, transport, weaponry, and tools.

Viaticus has rendered ammunition obsolete and offered an eco-friendly, infinite alternative.

Using solar panel technology to absorb the radiation of the Sun, we convert sunlight into infinite ammunition through a process called the photovoltaic effect. As photons hit a semiconductor material (like silicon cells) in the solar cell, it knocks electrons loose, creating a current that can be captured and projected in a ray-like 'blast.'
